Students at the Bowral High School STEM Day

This week Bowral High School ran their 2nd STEM Day in celebration of National Science Week. Over 650 students from local primary schools attended over two days giving them a chance to experience STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) at Bowral High School.

Due to the success of the STEM Day last year, this year’s event was opened up to Years 4-6. The STEM Day aimed to inspire students to pursue STEM in their future studies.

Throughout the STEM Day, over 650 students from Bowral, Mittagong, Colo Vale, Hill Top, Glenquarry, and Kangaloon Public Schools as well as Berrima Public and St Michael’s engaged and learned from Bowral High Science Staff as well as some of the gifted and talented Stage 5 STEM and Stage 6 students at Bowral High School.

Sessions were also be run by members from Sydney Women in Engineering and Information Technology (SWiEIT) at University of Technology Sydney (UTS), University of Wollongong (UOW), STEM.T4L, and the Department of Education’s IT Directorate (ITD).

Students were involved in a range of activities coding Ozobots and Cosmobots, Makey Makey, 3D printing, design-a-town challenge, LEGO Mindstorm, mechanical hand modelling, robotics, chair mass challenge, a Virtual Reality (VR) experience, as well as a ‘Cool’ Science demonstration where students got to see dry ice and sample liquid nitrogen ice-cream. The dry ice and liquid nitrogen being generously donated by Australian BioResources. Students were also given the chance to design and launch their own water-powered rockets with a group from Colo Vale PS students shooting their rocket across the oval over 120m.

Students left with an increased knowledge, the power, tools, and self-confidence to pursue careers in these fields.

Bowral High School would like to thank all those involved in making the day a great success, in particular, our local public schools, Sydney Women in Engineering and Information Technology (SWiEIT) at University of Technology Sydney (UTS), University of Wollongong (UOW), STEM.T4L, and the Department of Education’s IT Directorate (ITD).
