Science

Science is mandatory for all students from Year 7 to Year 10.

Science 7-10 provides a way of inquiring about the world around us. It explores evidence and investigates ways to discover, develop and produce solutions to real-world problems. Science emphasises the skills for working scientifically, as well as critical and creative thinking to address scientific issues.

In Years 11 and 12, students can choose from different science disciplines, including:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Earth and Environmental Science
  • Investigating Science
  • Physics.

In Year 12, students who are studying at least one other science subject may also choose to study Science Extension.

At Bowral High School we have a great reputation in science education in the Southern Highlands. In recent years our students have consistently won the Southern Highlands Science Spectacular, the regional Science Challenge, and we have had students compete and win categories in the Young Scientist Awards.

In 2018, we hosted our first STEM Day in celebration of National Science Week. Students from our local primary schools got the opportunity to experience STEM at Bowral High. The day aimed at inspiring students to pursue STEM in their future studies.

Our staff are dedicated and enthusiastic scientists and teachers with a mix of enthusiasm and experience.

We have 6 laboratories in the school. Each laboratory has gas, electricity and wireless data outlets allowing students to engage in a range of experiments and other hands-on activities. Other resources include a small dedicated computer room, a full-time laboratory assistant, computerised data logging equipment, data projectors in most laboratories and a huge range of other scientific apparatus.
