Student health and safety

We are committed to ensuring a safe and happy environment for your child.

We support your child’s health and safety through a range of strategies including:

For more information, visit the student wellbeing section of the department’s website.

Like all NSW public schools, we promote the healthy development of students through:

  • school programs and practices that protect and promote health and safety
  • supporting individual students who need help with health issues
  • providing first aid and temporary care of students who become unwell or who have an accident at school.

Behaviour support management

Bowral High School is committed to explicitly teaching and modelling positive behaviour and to supporting all students to be engaged with their learning. Key programs prioritised and valued by the school community are:

  • The Positive Behaviours for Success (PBS) program is used to reinforce behaviour expectations throughout the school through the promotion of our school values RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY and FAIRNESS. Classroom expectations are displayed in all learning areas. Students are rewarded for demonstrating the expected behaviour.
  • Wellbeing lessons for stages 4 and 5 play a significant role in the explicit teaching of positive behaviour to all students. The lessons are delivered by members of the wellbeing team, allowing the development of strong relationships between students and key staff.
  • At Bowral High School, students are known, valued and cared for. The needs of students are considered, and parent and student voices are valued when decisions are made. The Learning and Engagement Team provide oversight of assessment to ensure student needs are met.
  • The professional learning of all staff is planned and targeted to help support students to engage in learning positively and aligned with the school's Strategic Improvement Plan.
  • Key personnel have explicit roles and responsibilities in supporting our students and their families.

More details can be viewed in the BHS Behaviour Support Management Plan.

Student wellbeing

Like all NSW public schools, we provide safe learning and teaching environments to encourage healthy, happy, successful and productive students.

The department is committed to creating quality learning opportunities for children and young people. These opportunities support wellbeing through positive and respectful relationships and fostering a sense of belonging to the school and community.

The Wellbeing Framework for Schools helps schools support the cognitive, physical, social, emotional and spiritual development of students and allows them to connect, succeed and thrive throughout their education.

It is important that the school has a contact telephone number for emergencies. In cases of serious injury or illness where parents cannot be contacted the school will contact the Ambulance Service and arrange for transport to Bowral District Hospital.

Stymie

In addition to our usual reporting resources, Bowral High School has also signed up to Stymie. Stymie is an online reporting platform for students to communicate instances of bullying within the school. A common observation is that students often withhold reporting their personal experiences or witnessed incidents. Consequently, we remain unaware until these issues snowball into larger concerns. This innovative platform empowers students to assume responsibility and advocate for both themselves and their peers. Its implementation equips our school with the capability to promptly intervene at the initial point of need.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

At our school, we use Positive Behaviour for Learning – a whole-school approach for creating a positive, safe and supportive school climate where students can learn and develop. Our whole school community works together to establish expected behaviours and teach them to all students.
