Canberra day trip

In week 8, students from the Support Unit participated in a day trip to Canberra.

The support students arrived at school and departed for Canberra by 7:30am. The War Memorial was our first stop. Unfortunately, we had to enter before we could fully eat recess due to a celebration happening involving returned serviceman. We went in and watched a documentary to set the scene before entering and exploring all the different rooms. Everyone enjoyed the airplane bombing room and felt the floor shake as the plane gets ready to drop bombs. It is amazing to see the impact the War Memorial can have on everyone in such a short time period. As we left we were all asking to come back again.

Our second stop was at Questacon where we saw a range of science activities. We watched Miss Sutton build a tower of blocks and when she was finished we knocked it over. Highlights of Questacon were the bravery of most to attempt the free fall without hesitation, and Verity beating the robot at air hockey and the lightning exhibit. Lunch in the Questacon Cafe followed, with us enjoying the sun for a relaxing break on a beautiful day in Canberra.

Our last stop was at the National Gallery of Australia. All the students were interested and engaged in the great works of art on offer. Josh was especially impressed, amazed at the skills and complexity in the works of art. The enormity of the building and collection of works was a great life experience for all involved. Artists and their work included Jackson Pollock and Blue Polls, 100 various prints by Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol works including Soup Cans.

Enjoyment and humour continued all the way until our return to school at 6:00pm. It was a very long day, but the experiences and memories will last a lifetime. We all look forward to our next excursion.
