NAIDOC Week 2019

Bowral High School students and staff celebrated NAIDOC on Friday 21st June with a whole school assembly where they participated in a smoking ceremony and performance by Yuni man Goombine, who is from the Wodi Wodi Clan.

Staff and students participated as Goombine led the school in a song using the Tharawal language. He also talked to the school community about respecting ourselves, each other and the importance of identity.

Year 10 students had the great honour of listening to Adam Perkins talk about the important and historically significant work of his father, Charles, in fighting for equality for Aboriginal people throughout his life. Koori students had the chance to share stories and dance with Goombine in the new yarning circle. Goombine was very happy with the yarning circle and feels it is a circle of healing, as well as a place for all students to engage in respectful learning, where all voices are equal.

Teachers at Bowral High School are looking forward to learning more about the yarning circle and how they can incorporate it into innovative lessons for all students.
